Established in 1987, the award is administered by PEN American Center and underwritten by PEN trustee Barbara Goldsmith. Awards have been granted to 42 writers from around the world. Of the 38 award winners who were in prison at the time they were honoured, 35 have subsequently been released.
The award is one of many PEN awards sponsored by International PEN in over 145 PEN centres around the world. The PEN American Center awards have been characterized as being among the “major” American literary prizes
